There is no instrument so strongly evocative of inscrutable prehistory, remote civilisations, ancestral mythologies as the harp. Put in such an apodictic way, it is an utterly debatable assertion. But it is precisely this debatability that contains the fertile matter from which springs the impulse to investigate the possible meaning embedded in this handful of new compositions for harp, or rather for harp quartet, which further qualifies this recording venture: seven original compositions, specially commissioned and recorded as world premieres. The new music is performed by the Laborintus Harp Quartet (formerly the Adria Harp Quartet), an ensemble that was born and bred precisely with the specific characteristic of studying the interpretation of new compositions from the contemporary Italian scenario, with the clear intent of using all the means made available by new languages (electronic and interactive supports flank the most recent performing techniques devised for the harp) to seek out unexplored paths, making use of the distinctive timbre characteristics of this fascinating instrument.
